Caren Richardson and Amy Bowen claiming their Hank Lumen
01/09/2026
January 2025 was a month of rest, recovery, and reflection on the heels of a successful but exhausting first year as MixHaus Gallery. We were a bit worn out, coming off the excitement of the year having remade ourselves and doing so many things in new ways. We'd helped bring Visit Comfort Texas into the world to help brand and promote a waning Comfort, and produced creative pop-ups in some of the empty buildings in Comfort’s downtown the last half of 2024.
It was all rewarding, but we found ourselves asking, “How can we make what we do better, less stressful, more profitable, collaborative, and joyful?” Everything that came after was guided by this question. The first couple of months were spent doing deep and sometimes difficult self-reflection. We gave ourselves the grace to exhibit work we had on hand and to meet with new artists whose work excited us and pushed us beyond where we once thought we could go. And it paid off.
Our first special exhibit of the year March-April was Are We There Yet? featuring artists Kristy Battani, Sharon Kyle, and Hank Lumen. The show was quirky, fun, and a big success. All three artists were new to MixHaus Gallery, and we’re proud to have placed a number of their pieces with our collectors. The artists closed out the exhibit with an artist talk about what the title of the show meant to each of them, how and why they each make art, and what it means to be an artist, processing and expressing what many others cannot.
This was followed by one of our most heart-warming experiences yet as a gallery: Emergence. This exhibit featured work by two young emerging artists, Cypress Rabke and Leonardo Gutiérrez, who are both continuing their art practices in exciting ways. Cypress graduated high school just weeks after opening his first professional gallery exhibit and is now attending Rhode Island School of Design. Leonardo continues to live and work full-time in Comfort while painting and taking private lessons from a San Antonio instructor who drives to Comfort to meet with him here in the gallery. Leo is the only artist who sold out of all his work in our most recent Small Wonders exhibit. Besides this, Leo has become a dear friend and a big helper.
